Citizen Samba

Carnaval has passed away. And Orson Welles left a Samba selection from his 1942 film It’s All True – which no-one has heard yet. Even though he worked with Herivelto and Dalva, and at Globo TV nobody wanted him in the plot! They even preferred to create inexistent characters … Go figure…
So here’s the long awaited song list with download:

01) Linda Batista - Batuque no Morro
02) Anjos do Inferno - Nós Os Carecas
03) Pixinguinha - Carinhoso
04) Trio de Ouro - Ave Maria do Morro
05) Dom Um Romão - Escravos de Jó
06) Época de Ouro - Um a Zero
07) Vadico - Se Alguém Disse
08) Anjos do Inferno - Nega do Cabelo Duro
09) Orlando Silva - Lero-Lero

01) Linda Batista - Batuque no Morro
02) Anjos do Inferno - Nós Os Carecas
03) Pixinguinha - Carinhoso
04) Trio de Ouro - Ave Maria do Morro
05) Dom Um Romão - Escravos de Jó
06) Época de Ouro - Um a Zero
07) Vadico - Se Alguém Disse
08) Anjos do Inferno - Nega do Cabelo Duro
09) Orlando Silva - Lero-Lero

Many thanks for this link. What a wonderful find. I've been trying to hear this music for quite a long time, especially as I found the score used for the Paramount release of IT'S ALL TRUE such a complete disaster.
Jesus, if only they has used what ORSON WELLES wanted! ...

What a find! I dont know where all of these numbers came from, or if they would have become the musical sound track of IT'S ALL TRUE, but if authentic, and the songs themselves sound so, they open up a whole new arena of Latin American culture Orson Welles was attempting to bring to The United States with IT'S ALL TRUE. Remembering the era, I can tell you that half a dozen of these arrangements would have been on "The Hit Parade," and on the Charts, had they backed a major Hollywood production. We had to wait for watered down Walt Disney versions, manufactured here.

Thank You for this fascinating list of songs. One of the many interesting pieces of info in Catherine Benamou's book is a rough sketch of Welles's editing scheme for the "Carnival" segment of IT'S ALL TRUE, which would have included a kind of call-and-response duet between Grande Otello, singing a popular love song in the slum-like favelas, and ... Ver maisLinda Batista, singing the same song at the posh Urca Casino. Welles would have intercut between the two, as if they were singing together. This apparently is one thing that some Brazilian authorities objected to, Othello being given equal weight, and in "uncomfortably close proximity" to Batista, even though that proximity would have been only a cinematic illusion.

Here's Linda Batista singing VINGANCA, which I guess was her signature song:

I couldn't find anything on Youtube about Grande Otello. BTW, Richard Wilson said the Urca Casino finale was the only part of IAT to be completely edited and scored, and Welles told friends how proud he was of it and that he would go to the studio and show it when he was feeling depressed, and that it would cheer him up immediately. Wilson said the whole completed sequence is now probably at the bottom of the ocean, along with the missing Ambersons scenes.
